The Truth About Youth (Warners as “First National,” 1930)

The Truth About Youth was a 1930 Warners’ production based on a 30-year-old play, When We Were Twenty-One, by a writer named Henry V. Esmond. Produced under the “First National” imprint, The Truth About Youth was probably considered an antediluvian story then — the play had been produced on Broadway three times but the last time had been 1906 — and it doesn’t seem like screenwriter B. Harrison Orkow did much to update it. The top-billed star is Loretta Young, playing gooder-than-good Phyllis Ericson, daughter of the housekeeper to Col. Graham (J. Farrell MacDonald), who has been raising the young Richard Dane (David Manners) since he was six and his father died in an accident. Dad apparently lingered on a bit before expiring, since his last instructions were that Graham and his friends Richard Carewe (Conway Tearle) and Horace “Waddles” Palmer (Harry Stubbs) form a trio of guardians to raise young Richard, whose childhood nickname “The Imp” has stuck even though as the film opens he’s just about to turn 21.

The Guardians (that’s how they’re referred to throughout the movie) and Phyllis have planned a surprise birthday party for the Imp, complete with a symbolic place setting for his deceased father, but the Imp doesn’t come home that night; instead he phones and says his old psychiatry professor is lecturing that night at Carnegie Hall.

Pat Haden, USC's New AD, Replaces Mike Garrett

Southern California is cleaning house in its tarnished athletic department, throwing out much of what got the school in severe NCAA trouble.

Athletic director Mike Garrett and Reggie Bush's Heisman Trophy are the first two items to go.

In a letter to school supporters Tuesday, incoming USC president Max Nikias said Garrett will be replaced Aug. 3 by Pat Haden, the former Trojans quarterback who became a successful businessman and a member of USC's board of trustees. The school also will return its copy of Bush's trophy to the Heisman Trust, among several measures to disassociate itself from the tainted tailback. See the previous news : Mike Garet Retired

The NCAA cited Garrett's administration for a lack of institutional control while slapping the school with heavy sanctions last month, but Haden believes he can change the culture of a program that has been wildly successful and heavily scrutinized over the past decade.

"We're going to do better," said Haden, also the color analyst on NBC's Notre Dame broadcasts for the past decade. "We have to do better. We don't have any choices here. We stub our toe, there's going to be some problems."

Apple Earnings Crush Estimates, Stock Soars

Technology titan Apple (AAPL) laid waste to Wall Street expectations Tuesday, reporting record revenue and earnings on strong sales of the company's iPhone and iPad devices, which have proved to be massive hits with consumers. Despite lingering concerns over the iPhone 4 antenna problem, the company offered a very optimistic outlook for next quarter.

It was the strongest performance by revenue in the history of the 34-year-old company, which earlier this year surpassed erstwhile rival Microsoft (MSFT) in market capitalization. The company reported profit of $3.25 billion, a 78% increase over last year.

Investors sent the Apple's shares up 5% in after-hours trading. "These numbers will go a long way to make people forget about any antenna issues," Edward Jones analyst Bill Kreher told Reuters.

Apple habitually low-balls expectations, but the firm's performance over the last eighteen months has been nothing short of extraordinary. The company's share price is up 20% so far this year and 65% over the last 12 months. Over the last three years, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has tripled Apple's revenue and quadrupled the company's earnings.

CHICAGO — After all those dirt-kicking, base-tossing tantrums, Lou Piniella is going out with more of a whimper.

This isn't the way he envisioned his final days as the Chicago Cubs' manager.

The team had bigger plans, too.

Piniella announced Tuesday he will retire at the end of the season, completing a storied and often colorful career that included 18 years in the majors as a player and another 22 as a manager.

The 66-year-old Piniella, who made five trips to the World Series in his career and has three championship rings, said he was looking forward to spending more time with his family. He didn't rule out consulting for the Cubs or another team, but made it clear he was getting out of the daily grind.

Mike Garret Will Retire as US Athletic Director

Mike Garrett, the embattled longtime athletic director at the University of Southern California, will step down on August 3rd, according to a report by the L.A. Times.

Garrett has been under fire for the troubles in both the basketball and football programs, and responded in a mature fashion by accepting responsibility for the issues, and promised to resolve them as the head of the program. He spoke to USC's sanctioning by the NCAA in the Reggie Bush scandal in particular.

As I read the decision by the NCAA, all I could get out of all of this was … I read between the lines and there was nothing but a lot of envy, and they wish they all were Trojans," Garrett said to cheers Thursday night at the San Francisco Airport Marriott.

Playboy’s Smoking Jacket Website May Be Good News for Kevin Ham

According to a report in today’s New York Post, Playboy is rolling out a website that should be safe for people to view at work or other environments where nudity and sexual content would be inappropriate. The new website will be known as TheSmokingJacket.com, and it intentionally contains no references to Playboy, allowing it to bypass work filters that have “playboy” blocked.

The article cited Theresa Hennessey, spokeswoman for Playboy who said that Playboy’s editorial director Jimmy Jellinek “will be pleased if TheSmokingJacket.com receives 1 million unique visitors a month.“ Playboy’s flagship website, Playboy.com receives around 6 million visitors per month.

The website was aptly named The Smoking Jacket because of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner’s love for silk smoking jackets. Ironically, the Post’s article joked that Playboy chose the name they did because SilkPajamas.com was already registered, but it should be noted that SmokingJacket.com is similarly registered (since 2000) and it appears to be owned by one of Kevin Ham’s companies.

18 Titi Monkeys Tried to be Smuggled Under Man’s T-Shirt

Authorities at Mexico City’s International airport have arrested a man that was carrying 18 titi monkeys in his clothes. Suspicious grew larger when upon questioning he became very nervous. These titi monkeys are an endangered species.

The man who allegedly tried to smuggle the animals has been identified as Roberto Cabrera, 38. Two of the tiny monkeys didn’t survive the rough handling and “packing”.

Cabrera, according to migration papers, arrived from Lima, Peru carrying these creatures. He has stated he bought the monkey in his travel at $30 each, but even if his claims are true, he must know we are talking here about an endangered animal, and their transportation requires a special permit for travel.
